Editorial Policy

This page states how Ski Length Calculator chooses, checks and corrects its numbers — so a reader can judge any figure on the site without taking it on trust. Last reviewed: 28 October 2026.

The two-source rule

Most constants in the calculators rest on two published sources, and none rests on a single unverified claim where a checkable second source exists. Sizing charts are read from the publisher's own page and reconciled against at least one other published source; where a figure is regulated — the FIS minimums above all — it is taken from the governing document and verified against an independent tabulation. Where only one publisher prints a figure, or the site synthesizes one from published data, the page says so — those are the judgment calls covered next. Research notes, including the ranges where sources disagree, are kept with the project and summarized on each calculator page.

Judgment calls are labeled

Some numbers are models rather than measurements: the older-skier comfort trim, the touring deduction, the choice of where inside a published band an ability level lands. Those are stated as models on their pages, with the reasoning, so a reader who disagrees can see exactly what to override and by how much. One column is an exception of a different kind: the beginner column is a single publisher's (evo's) published column, disclosed as such on its page, because no second publisher prints an equivalent column in a form that can be re-verified. What the site never does is present a judgment call as a published fact, or a published fact without its source.

No commercial influence

The site sells nothing, takes no commissions that depend on which ski you buy, and accepts no payment to feature, lengthen or shorten a recommendation. Where a source is a retailer (several of the best published charts are), that fact is visible from the citation itself, and the figure stands only because independent sources agree with it.

Corrections

Errors are corrected at the source — in the calculator's data, not just in the page text — and every correction passes the same automated check suite as a new feature, including regenerating the worked examples from the engine so no stale number survives in prose. Readers' reports via the error form are the main external check and are acted on in order of how many skiers the error could mislead.

Review cadence

Regulated figures (FIS equipment rules) are re-checked when new specifications are published; retail charts are re-read each Northern-Hemisphere autumn, before the season; and every calculator page carries its own 'Last verified' date, which is the honest one to trust for that page's numbers. This policy page is reviewed whenever the sourcing rules themselves change.
